Finding Analyzed License Information

To make best use of this section you should already be familiar with How to Browse the Data-Base.

In general, the Browse area of the user interface operates as follows:

1. A folder from the folder navigation panel or upload from the upload area is selected.
2. Uploads are either highlighted in blue or black. Black uploads indicate a single file was uploaded.
   Blue indicates that there is more contents inside.
   
   • If the upload is black (a file), select the [VIEW] link to display it.
     
   • If the upload is a link select it to display the contents of the folder.
     
3. Continue navigating downward through the folders, by selecting them, until you’ve reached the area
   where you would like to display license information.

The upload jobs have completed. How do I find the licenses in the product I just uploaded?
If you stored your upload in the top-level default folder (Software Repository), or a subfolder,
you can use the Browse menu item to access that folder and it’s contents.

To illustrate how to browse for analyzed license information, let’s look at the following example.
We’ve created a folder called Fossology-Examples, downloaded Fossology to it, and analyzed Fossology.
Now let’s find some Fossology licenses:

1. Select Fossology’s Browse tab.
   
   
2. Select the Fossology-Examples folder in Browse’s Folder Navigation area.
   
3. Select the fossology.tar.bz2/ subfolder displayed in the Uploads area of the screen.
4. Select the fossology/ subfolder that is displayed, as shown below.
   
   NOTES: In general, you can keep browsing (selecting) sub-folders displayed on the screen until you reach a folder that contains licenses that you want to view. You will be able to view licenses when the dynamic menu bar above the list of licenses shows License as a menu item.
   As you progress through the folders, your position is tracked in the Folder: area. You can click on any folder displayed in the folder tracking area to navigate to that folder.
   
   Getting back to our example, after clicking the fossology/ folder, your Browse window will look like the following:
   
5. Select the [License] menu item from the menu bar located directly above the folder information.
   
   Once you’ve clicked [License], a table of the licenses found in the uploaded file is displayed,
   as shown in the following screen example:
   
   In the above screen, the items highlighted in blue in the displayed table are ‘hot’ links,
   and may be selected to obtain further information.
   
6. Select Show (under Files column) next to the license called LGPL v2.1.
   
   You will see the folder path to each file that contains that license, as shown below:
   
7. Press your browser’s Back button to return to the previous License Browser screen.
   
   Note the files/folders listing to the right of the table.
   You can use this listing to display additional types of information.
   • If you select a file name highlighted in blue, you will display:
     • the selected file’s text (as best as possible)
     • the license matches in the text, highlighted in alternating colors
   • If you select a folder name highlighted in blue, you will display the contents of the folder,
     with a license table that is appropriate for that folder and it’s contents.
     
     For example, if you clicked the file name “copying” in the above screen, you would see the following information.
     The table at the top of the screen summarizes the license matches, while the matching license text itself is displayed below and highlighted in the colors shown in the table. (For the purpose of this example, only a portion of the license text is shown.)
     
     
     And, if you clicked the folder name “ui/” from the above display, you would see the following:
     
     

The license information can be viewed anytime there is a license mini-menu. The license data shown will be dependent on where in the folder hierarchy the license information was asked for. Each folder shows all of the license information in that folder and sub-folders below it. For example, the top folder where license information is available, shows all of the licenses for that area. In contrast, the last folder in that folder tree (no sub-folders) only shows the licenses (if any) that are contained in that last folder.
